Good health starts with a safe home environment and family development. Preventing and protecting against diseases before they spread, creating a safe environment, and establishing a loving culture will help children and their parents to create a lasting bond. By making smart choices, we can overcome many health issues and live more productive lives.

Class Descriptions

Nutrition and Exercise

Participants will learn about nutrition using the MyPlate philosophy. We will discuss healthy food choices and the importance of physical activity in their daily lives

Tobacco Prevention

Students will learn about the addictive properties of nicotine, why electronic cigarettes are a major health threat to teens and adults, and receive tools to resist peer pressure.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention

This class is focused on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections by making participants aware of how STIs are spread, what their symptoms may be, and where individuals can go to seek treatment.

Alcohol Prevention

Participants will learn the effects of alcohol on the human body, address common misconceptions regarding alcohol use, and receive tools to resist peer pressure.

Personal Hygiene

Participants will learn about overall personal hygiene with discussion on proper hand, body, dental, and sleep practices.

Active Parenting of Teens and Teens In Action

This multi-session class covers:

  • Parent(s)/Caregiver(s) will learn about different parenting and discipline techniques while teens learn ways to survive and thrive in their adolescent years.
  • Teens and their parent(s)/caregivers will learn how to better communicate with each other in a respectful and productive way as well as how to reduce high risk behavior.

Communicable Disease Awareness

This class will discuss many of the communicable diseases that can be contracted within our community, as well as methods for decreasing the spread of disease.

Prescription Drug Abuse

Class will discuss the impacts of misusing prescription medications. Participants will learn what is considered prescription misuse and how incorrect use of prescription opioids can lead to addiction.

Eating Disorders

A presentation/discussion focused on raising awareness about eating disorders and providing resources available to those needing further information.

Healthy Relationships

Participants will learn about the qualities and characteristics of a healthy relationship. We will also discuss how to be aware of our emotions and how they influence our behaviors.

Sun Safety

Participants will learn ways to take care of themselves while exposed to the sun and heat.  Topics will include skin safety, importance of hydration, and signs/symptoms of heat-related illness.

Stress Management

This class will discuss causes of stress, how stress affects the body, and ways to alleviate stress in your life.  Relaxation techniques will be reviewed and practiced.

Public Health as a Career

Participants will learn about an area of interest within the Department of Public Health from a professional in that area of work. Areas can include Health Education, Public Health Nursing, WIC Program, Environmental Health and Emergency Preparedness. We will discuss how public health helps this community in that focused area of the department.

First Aid, AED & CPR Certification

Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Length: 6 hours
This class is for individuals who have never received CPR training in the past or whose certification has expired. The course will cover how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on infants, children and adults; how to effectively use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) device; and how to apply basic First Aid care. Successful completion of the course will earn participants a 2-year American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Please dress in comfortable clothing and be prepared for hands-on activity, including time on a carpeted floor, during the class. Course fee is $50.

Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid Renewal

Length: 2 hours
This refresher class is for individuals who possess valid CPR certification that is nearing expiration, typically two years after completion. The class will review CPR, AED use and First Aid care. Successful completion of the course will earn participants a 2-year American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Please dress in comfortable clothing and be prepared for hands-on activity, including time on a carpeted floor, during the class. Course fee is $50.
